BIM Modeling
(BIM) or Building Information Modeling is a new service of Matrix Construction, located in Anderson, SC. What is BIM? BIM is a software used by many companies who plan, design and construct different types of infrastructure and built environments. Building Information Models (BIM) extends beyond 3D modeling to give information on what is termed a 4th and 5th dimension of a construction project. These include time and cost. It also covers spatial relationships, light analysis, geographic information, and quantities and properties of building components (for example, manufacturers’ details). BIM is a great improvement over the plan, section and elevation of traditional 2D technical drawings.
BIM allows a client not only to visualize a project in 3D but also allows for each element of the project to have defined parameters including cost estimates, material tracking and ordering. The BIM plan can be passed from discipline to discipline, i.e architect, to surveyor to engineers allowing each to add data to the plan. This reduces information losses that occur when each new team takes ‘ownership’ of the project, and provides more information regarding a complex building job.
Construction Management has benefited greatly from BIM which allows for better visualization of a project before construction which reduces uncertainty, improves safety and allows designers to simulate and analyze potential impacts. All of these technological advances lead to a bottom line of cost savings with any large scale project.
